NDMC Invited talk series: Invited talk by Dr. Lata Kapoor, Assistant Director, NCDC on “AMR Containment in India: Research and innovation priorities”

July 01, 2026

NDMC was delighted to host Dr. Lata Kapoor, Additional Director of the National Centre for Disease Control (NCDC), for an insightful talk on the research and innovation priorities required for antimicrobial resistance (AMR) containment in India. The visit also provided an opportunity for productive discussions between Dr. Kapoor and NDMC research associates and scientists, particularly the AMR modelling group led by Prof. Saket Choudhary.

In her talk, Dr. Kapoor highlighted the unique infrastructural challenges faced by India in estimating the burden of AMR, including the lack of high-quality data on infections and antibiotic use, limited capacity for AMR susceptibility testing, syndromic management of outpatient (OPD) patients, and the high cost of diagnostics. She emphasized that preventing infections in intensive care units (ICUs) is one of the most important strategies for AMR containment, particularly in India, and is a key objective of the National Action Plan on AMR (NAP-AMR 2.0).

Dr. Kapoor also stressed that the One Health approach to AMR control must be tailored to the Indian context by integrating local challenges and priorities. She concluded by calling upon clinicians, modellers, epidemiologists, and researchers to break down disciplinary silos and work collaboratively to address the growing challenge of antimicrobial resistance. This approach will enable the generation of good quality data and its use for meaningful data modelling studies.

The visit promoted meaningful discussions on advancing interdisciplinary research and strengthening the role of mathematical modelling in informing AMR policy and public health decision-making. NDMC sincerely thanks Dr. Kapoor for her valuable time and insights and looks forward to continued collaboration in support of evidence-based strategies for AMR containment in India.
