NDMC Talk Series: Invited talks by Dr. Nikhil Tandon, Dr. S.V. Madhu, Dr. Ashok Das and Dr. V. Mohan

March 25 - 26, 2026

NDMC organised expert talks featuring leading endocrinologists from across India.

The first talk, titled Strategies for Prevention of Type 2 Diabetes and its Complications, was delivered by Dr. S V Madhu (UCMS, GTB Hospital, Delhi). The talk compared different intervention strategies in terms of their effectiveness for diabetes prevention and control, and elaborated on the benefits of incorporating yoga into daily routines as a practical and effective approach to diabetes prevention and management.

The second talk, titled Technology and Task-Sharing: A Strategic Approach for Managing Diabetes, was delivered by Dr. Nikhil Tandon (AIIMS, Delhi). The talk highlighted the importance of integrating emerging tools with existing health databases, and redistributing certain diagnostic and assessment responsibilities to nurses and other support staff as a means of improving the overall quality of care. Dr. Tandon also reflected on the journey from research insights to their incorporation into national policy guidelines.

The third talk, titled Diabetes, Hypertension, Heart and Kidney - The Deadly Quartet, was delivered by Dr. Ashok Kumar Das (MGMCRI, Puducherry). The talk reflected on the various complications arising from diabetes, underscoring the importance of maintaining regulated blood glucose levels to reduce the likelihood of developing associated comorbidities. It also highlighted gender differences in healthcare-seeking behaviour and their implications for disease burden and the quality of care delivered.

The last talk, titled Epidemiology of Diabetes in India and its Subtypes, was delivered by Dr. V. Mohan (Dr. Mohan's Diabetes Specialities Centre and Madras Diabetes Research Foundation, Chennai). The talk explored the different types of diabetes and the critical need to accurately identify these subtypes - particularly in younger populations - as a precise diagnosis has the potential to significantly improve clinical outcomes and substantially reduce healthcare costs. Dr Mohan further underscored the importance of developing low-cost, homegrown solutions for both diagnosis and insulin pump therapy, with a view to improving the coverage of preventive care and enhancing treatment outcomes.
