3rd Tuberculosis India - Modelling Interest Group (TB-MIG) Workshop

April 20 - 23, 2026

The 3rd TBI-MIG Workshop is the third in the series of workshops conducted by the TB modelling secretariat of NDMC, led by Prof. Sarika Mehra, Professor, Department of Chemical Engineering, IIT Bombay, and Prof. Mithun Mitra, Professor, Department of Physics, IIT Bombay, in collaboration with Prof. Nimalan Arinaminpathy, Team Lead, World Health Organisation (WHO).

The workshop brought together researchers and participants to share updates on TB modelling, gain insights from experts, and engage in practical exercises. Dr. Sandip Mandal, Adjunct Associate Professor, KCDH, IIT Bombay, Senior Advisor- Data Analytics and Mathematical Modelling, John Snow India; Dr. Kiran Kumar Rade, International Technical Consultant, STOP TB partnership and Independent consultant at WHO Headquarters and SEARO and Dr. Vineet Chadha Public Health Expert and TB epidemiologist, Ex-advisor, National TB Institute, Ex-director, National Leprosy and Training Institute, served as resource persons, fostering meaningful discussions and providing valuable guidance throughout the workshop. Dr. Susmita Chatterjee, Program Head, Health Economics, George Institute for Global Health, also joined as a resource person and shared her knowledge on health economics. A total of 14 participants from NDMC, ICMR - National Institute of Epidemiology (NIE), ICMR-National Institute of Translational Virology and AIDS Research (NITVAR), International AIDS Vaccine Initiative (IAVI), Visva Bharati University, WHO, ICMR-National Institute for Research in Tuberculosis (NIRT) and Tamil Nadu Veterinary and Animal Sciences University attended the workshop.

Day 1 commenced with opening remarks followed by participant presentations on project progress and future plans. The afternoon sessions focused on reviewing Markov Chain Monte Carlo (MCMC) methods and beginning calibration exercises related to burden estimation, helping participants strengthen their modelling foundations.

Day 2 sessions centred on economics in health modelling. Dr. Susmita Chatterjee delivered a talk on cost and cost-effectiveness, particularly from a health system perspective. Participants then engaged in group work exploring methods to estimate costs and Disability-Adjusted Life Years (DALYs) within models. Later sessions included coding exercises on interventions aimed at improving treatment outcomes.

Day 3, the sessions expanded to include the topic of patient costs. Dr. Chatterjee introduced the topic, followed by Dr. Muniyandi’s session on research related to patient costs. Group discussions explored how patient costs can be integrated into disease models. Participants later completed a second intervention coding exercise involving Active Case Finding (ACF), while accounting for both health system and patient costs. Dr. Sumit Godara, Project Research Scientist at NDMC presented his work on modelling TB transmission in high-risk household contacts.

Day 4 began with a morning session on incorporating patient costs into the model, while the later part of the day focused on consolidation and future directions. Participants discussed coding solutions, reviewed released model code, and heard from Dr. Kiran Rade regarding potential future collaborative projects. The workshop concluded with practice exercises aimed at strengthening skills in interpreting data within modelling frameworks.
