Roundtable discussion on AMR burden estimation

March 20, 2026

NDMC organised a round-table discussion on the current challenges and progress in estimating the burden of antimicrobial resistance (AMR) in the Indian context on 20th March, 2026.

Prof. Sarika Mehra, PI, NDMC, opened the workshop with an overview of NDMC. Prof. Saket Choudhary who is leading the AMR group at NDMC, facilitated the exchange of insights and perspectives among a panel of esteemed experts who participated in the gathering. Dr. Kamini Walia, ICMR, New Delhi, along with Dr. Sonam Vijay, ICMR, New Delhi, gave a presentation on "ICMR's AMR surveillance and stewardship networks: Data systems, infrastructure, and progress". This was followed by presentations on "AMR disease burden estimation: Methodology, challenges, and future directions" by Prof. Bhaswati Ganguli, NDMC, University of Calcutta; "Data preprocessing and exploratory analysis for AMR burden estimation using ICMR surveillance data" by Nima Jijo, Research Scientist, NDMC, IIT Bombay; and "AMR burden estimation framework: GBD methodology adaptation, facility-level results, and comparison with global estimates" by Dr. Namrata Kharat, Epidemiologist, NDMC, IIT Bombay.

Experts who shared valuable perspectives and made notable contributions to the discussion included Dr. Jacob John, CMC Vellore; Dr. Sanjay Mehendale, Hinduja Hospital, Mumbai; Dr. Geeta Menon, MoHFW, New Delhi; Dr. Rakesh Lodha, AIIMS Delhi; Dr. Anurag Agrawal, Ashoka University; Dr. Nusrat Shafiq, PGIMER Chandigarh; and Dr. Niranjan Saggruti, Population Council in India.
